Pooh Plays Doctor By K.W. Zoehfeld. ISBN: 0786831243. (Infants and preschoolers)
Using Christopher Robin's doctor kit, Pooh finds out about reflexes, heartbeats, blood pressure, and shots. Pooh is not sick but when told he has to go to the doctor, says he starts to feel sick. Basic and light. Good simple intro to common items.
Franklin Goes to the Hospital By S. Jennings. ISBN: 0439083702. (Ages 4-7)
Franklin the Turtle has to go to the hospital for an operation because he cracked his shell. Franklin goes through the hospital admission procedure, after hearing his friends and family tell him how brave he is. Franklin holds up well until he gets to the X-ray room. The doctor explains what an X-ray can and can't do, and what fear and bravery are all about. The book explains the hospital procedure well and addresses the fears children have about the doctor and hospitals. Recommend use with parent or child life specialist.
Rita Goes to the Hospital By Martine Davison. ISBN: 0679818200. (Ages 5-7)
This book is well done, but may not seem universally applicable due to the main character's unique condition (a clotting difficulty). With the help of friendly staff members, Rita enjoys her visit to the hospital to have her tonsils taken out. Great explanation of what to expect.
Chris Gets Ear Tubes By B. Pace. ISBN: 093032336X. (Ages 5-7).
Describes the experience of a young boy whose chronic ear infections are affecting his hearing, until he goes into the hospital for a simple operation. Depicts some common hospital scenes. Good for use with parents/child life specialists.
Tubes in My Ears: My Trip to the Hospital By V. Dooley. ISBN: 1572551186. (Ages 5-8)
A child who had to have ear tubes inserted, describes his hospital experiences. His language maintains a childlike perspective, but provides essential information. Additional facts, such as explanations of instruments, appear in boxes.

This article out of the UK set out to look at what initiatives have been taken to meet Article 31(2) of the UN Convention on the rights of the Child and the provision of opportunities to take part in recreation and leisure activities. The article discussed definitions of play, the importance of play and research on the developmental, social and health benefits of play. The article does specifically mention play and the sick or hospitalized child, discussing that research has indicated that play can help hospitalized children to feel less anxious about medical treatment, but goes on to say that play in such a context is essentially play that is not “freely chosen” or “personally directed” and therefore the article includes no further discussion of play specific to healthcare.
