Certified Child Life Specialists provide evidence-based, developmentally appropriate interventions including therapeutic play, preparation and education that reduce fear, anxiety, and pain for infants, children, and youth. Certified Child Life Specialists are educated and trained in the developmental impact of illness and injury. Their role helps improve patient and family care, satisfaction and overall experience.

  • ACLP Seeks Nominations for 2018 Research Recognition Awards

    The Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) is pleased to announce the availability of two research awards to be presented at the Annual Conference on Professional Issues in Washington, D.C., in May 2018. The Professional Research Recognition Award honors significant work by a child life specialist, and the Student Research Recognition Award acknowledges research conducted by a student. Both awards celebrate research initiatives that contribute to theory and practice within the field of child life.

  • 2018 ACLP Board of Directors Election Slate

    The ACLP Nominating Committee is pleased to announce a call for nominations of candidates to be considered for the 2018 ACLP Board of Directors election slate. The 2018 slate will include the positions of President-Elect, Secretary, and two Directors. As part of this process, the committee seeks diverse representation on the recommended slate, with an opportunity for members from all geographic locations and types and sizes of program to be considered. The deadline for nominations is November 3, 2017.

  • New Eligibility Assessment Process for 2019-2021 Candidates Now Available

    A new online process is available to assess the eligibility of applicants against the requirements that will be in place from 2019 through the end of 2021. Applicants may log into their profile, pay a fee for the Eligibility Assessment, and immediately begin entering their eligibility information. The Child Life Certifying Committee is implementing this process as part of an overall effort to streamline the exam application experience and to provide applicants with a tool for monitoring their progress toward establishing eligibility.

  • ACLP Diversity Scholarships for Winter/Spring Internships

    The application portal for Diversity Scholarships for Winter/Spring 2018 internships will be available on October 10, 2017. Applications are due by November 15, 2017. The goal of these scholarships is to support students from diverse backgrounds who may otherwise struggle to complete an internship as well as students who are uniquely qualified to work with diverse populations. Each scholarship will be for $5000 (USD) and will be dispersed in increments over the course of the internship.

Cultural Humility Workshop


ACLP Member Divna Wheelwright, MA, CCLS is Manager of Child Life at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She recently provided a comprehensive cultural humility training with a specific focus on the intersection of child life and social justice. The team was lead through a series of exercises designed to uncover unconscious bias, explore the concept of microaggression and increase the quality of their advocacy skills.
