Child Life Professional Data Center

The Child Life Professional Data Center (CLPDC) is a tool to help child life programs track and compare programmatic and capacity for patient impact data with others. The CLPDC tracks both annual and quarterly data on child life programs. All data will be entered and housed in a robust platform that allows users to compare data and run reports.

  • Entering Data: Child life programs enter both annual program data and quarterly patient encounters data. Programs must enter at least 50% of the data requested to access comparisons and reports.

  • Comparing Data: Participants can compare their staffing, services, and capacity for patient/family impact data for the entire field or use filters to compare against similar programs (i.e. hospital type, location, # of child life FTEs, etc).

  • Running Reports: The CLPDC platform has many built-in report displaying data in charts that users can download, either for the entire field or using filters to customize the results. Slides and graphics from the reports are ready to add to presentations and can demonstrate the impact of child life services to administrators.

In order to access the Child Life Professional Data Center, you must have an ACLP login.

Troubleshooting

Is a subscription required to enter and view data?

No. Any child life program can enter data and view basic comparisons and reports for free. Programs that want access to full filtering and reporting features can purchase an annual subscription. Visit the CLPDC subscriptions page to learn more.

Why can't I enter data into the system?

There are several reasons you might not have the ability to enter data. If you are not the leader of clinical child life program, you likely do not have access to data entry.

If you believe your program should be included or if you will be entering data on behalf of a clinical program leader, please contact us at datacenter@childlife.org and we'll be happy to assist you.

Why do I see only some data?

  1. If you do not work at a clinical child life program, you will be able to see industry-level data only.
  2. If you work at a child life program but your program did not enter the minimum amount of annual and/or quarterly data, you will see limited data and reports.
  3. If you work at a child life program but your program does not have a current benchmarking subscription, you will see limited data and reports. You can update your benchmarking subscription in the ACLP Store.

How do we track our quarterly data?

Different data tracking methods will work for different programs. Program leaders are encouraged to engage their staff in discussions about what is realistic and doable for them. That said, the Benchmarking Subcommittee has developed a few sample data collection tools that can be adapted for use at the program level.

Success Story

Having 20+ year experience as a CCLS, being a member of ACLP, access to a network of colleagues always willing to support, and being a part of the Data Committee for over 7 years I feel, has given me the strength and tools to be successful.

Utilizing information from the CLDPC has helped me on this journey and I know will continue to do so. Recently, our CEO, asked me to present what services my department is currently providing and what are the opportunities for growth. In attendance would be various members of administration.

I used this graph, staffing data from 2017, comparing ourselves to other free-standing academic hospitals with 100- 300 beds (thanks to the filtering capability). At the time I had 2 CCLS, which as you can see didn’t even compare to other facilities. My discussion focused on the endless possibilities we have for growth and how to improve the care we provide to our patients and families. We could be in the 50th (13.6 FTE) or better yet, why not the 75th (17.75FTE’s) percentile. Lots of questions were asked and I felt listened to and supported. Little did I know…

Four hours later I received a call and was told to hire another CCLS and that I would be able to hire another by the end of the year. I’m also seeking grant support from a local organization and utilizing data has been helpful.
